Focused Ultrasound

Focused ultrasound patient education

A clear understanding of your condition and treatment options is an important part of the treatment process. For patients considering MRI-guided focused ultrasound, reliable information reduces uncertainty and gives a better sense of what to expect before, during and after treatment.

The resources below are organized by where you are in the process. They include the full-length patient guide written by our team, the pages on this site that matter most at each stage, and trusted organizations outside RUSH. As focused ultrasound continues to evolve, this section will expand with updated content, research developments and additional resources relevant to both current and future treatments.

Patient's Guide to MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound

Written by Sepehr Sani, MD, as a practical companion to the MRgFUS process from the first consultation through long-term follow-up.

It covers the history of the technology and how sound energy is focused through the intact skull, the conditions treated and how candidacy is assessed, the day of treatment in detail — frame, helmet, membrane and the graded sonications — recovery and what to expect in the weeks that follow, outcomes and complications, and the considerations specific to treating the second side.
